Windows 98SR2 Beta is here! April 12, 1999
I have been running the Windows 98 Service Release Beta 2 on my main computer for a week. One of the benefits of becoming a Micrsoft Certified Systems Engineer is a one year subscription to Microsoft's Technet Plus. This subscription provides the invaluable Technet Tools and Beta Software as it is released. I feel it is definitely work the time and effort required to earn the MCSE certificate.
The SR Beta 2 seems to be more stable than Windows 98. One added feature that may be welcome to users who are setting up their own networks is the Internet Connection Sharing. The Internet Connection Sharing will all you share a connection to the internet with other computers connected to your network. The current way to share an internet connection is by using third party software which may be complicated to setup.
I am looking forward to the retail release of the Service Release. I have not had to much time to investigate the features of the SR, mainly do to an ailing harddrive. Which is ready to be repacked and sent back to the manufacturer. I will add more as time permits.
Windows 98 is here!
Remember all the hoopla when Windows 95 was unleased on us. A media blitz like never before with thousands of us scrambling to get our copy of this new operating system. I was one of the few who help out for months, not convinced that I had to have Windows 95. I finally purchased Windows 95 after I started getting calls from parents of students at the school where I was the Computer Guy. The parents were frantic looking for help with Windows 95, so I reluctantly purchased Windows 95. Eventually I stopped using Windows 3.1 and removed it from my system. While Windows 95 was buggy the features outweighed the problems.
Windows 98 was released without much fanfare. Some mail order companies offered special deals if you purchased your copy of Windows 98 in advance with guaranteed delivery at your door on the release date. Bill Gates made a statement just before the release of Windows 98 fortelling the eventual demise of the Windows 98 operating system in favor of the future release of Windows NT. Remember he had some trouble with Windows 98 when he was trying to demonstrate it.
I had tried to get into Microsoft's Beta program, but was rejected. When the Beta 3 was released to the public I purchased two copies. I did this after being frustrated by the frequent application failures in Windows 95. The Beta 3 version was much more stable than Windows 95. I was very impressed by the Beta 3 version. I could not wait to get my copy of the real version.
